Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: For Omega 3 Comment: I am a believer in supplements, and (amongst other things) I take Evening Primrose Oil capsules. This bottle contains 180 softgels, and two of these babies (1000 mg Primrose Oil) contain: 720 mg of Cis-Linoleic Acid 90 mg of Gamma Linolenic Acid 30 IU of Vitamin E. Now if you are looking for a source of Omega 3, Evening Primrose Oil is great. Omega 3 is known to be more effective when you get it directly from the food you eat, BUT and here's the kicker, it's also more effective when Omega 3 doesn't have to compete with Omega 6. Many supplements lump the Omega Fatty Acids together, or present a supplement with larger amounts of Omega 6. The American diet is notoriously weighed towards Omega 6. That's partly due to the meat people eat (cows destined for the meat market are fed a corn-based diet). I can't stand Fish Oil capsules, so for me, the Evening Primrose Oil capsules are a good alternative. I like the Nature Made brand. The company was founded in Northridge, California in 1971, and many of their products carry DSVP certification (United States Pharmacopeia's (USP) Dietary Supplement Verification Program). Although, it should be noted that the certification is currently limited and does not extend to all products. Editorial Reviews: Evening Primrose Oil contains seeds that are one of the richest sources of gamma-linoleic acid (GLA). GLA is an essential fatty acid that is necessary for normal body function. (Oenothera biennis) Evening Primrose Oil is used for premenstrual conditions such as irritability, breast tenderness and bloating. It is suggested that a minimum of 3% of the daily caloric intake of healthy adults should be derived from essential fatty acids like Cis-Linoleic Acid and Gamma-Linolenic Acid which perform many vital functions and are necessary for proper cellular metabolism. Called Evening Primrose because its light yellow flowers open at dusk, this wildflower grows in North America and Europe. Although the plant has long been used for medicinal purposes, the use of its seed oil, which contains gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), is relatively recent.
